How to Choose a Decorative Finish Applicator

Colortale Design Studio23 October 2026

With microcement, limewash and Venetian plaster, the applicator matters as much as the material. These finishes are made by hand on your wall, so the same product can look superb or fail depending on preparation and skill.

Choose an applicator who shows you finished work in that exact finish, makes a sample on your site, explains the preparation and layers in writing, and tells you how to care for the surface afterwards.

What to Check First

  • Finished work in the same finish: microcement, limewash and Venetian plaster need different skills. Ask for projects in the finish you want, ideally ones you can visit.
  • Who does the work: the company's own team, or subcontractors? Who supervises on site?
  • Product knowledge: can they explain the system (primer, coats, sealer) and why?
  • Surface assessment: do they inspect your walls or floors before quoting?

Questions to Ask

QuestionWhy it matters
What preparation does my surface need?Most failures start with poor preparation (substrate preparation)
How many coats, and which primer and sealer?Layers and sealing decide durability
Will you make a sample on my site?Light and surface change the look
What is the timeline, including curing?Rushing layers causes defects
How will you protect other areas?Dust and splashes in a lived-in home
What happens if a crack or defect appears?Agree the remedy before work starts
How do I clean and maintain it?Wrong cleaners damage some finishes

Samples: Insist on Them

Sample boards in the studio are a start. A sample on your own wall or floor, under your own lighting, is better. Agree which sample is the approved reference, and keep it.

Comparing Quotes

Line items should be comparable:

  • preparation and repairs;
  • primer;
  • number of coats;
  • sealer and number of sealer coats;
  • area measured;
  • protection and clean-up;
  • timeline.

A quote that seems far cheaper often has fewer coats, less preparation or no sealer. Ask what is included rather than comparing totals alone.

Timelines

Hand-applied finishes take days, not hours, because each layer must dry. Colortale's own guidance is that most residential projects take from a few days to a couple of weeks or a month, depending on size. Be wary of anyone promising a much faster job on a large area.

Red Flags

  • No examples of the exact finish.
  • No site visit before quoting.
  • Unwilling to make a sample.
  • Vague about primer, coats and sealer.
  • Promises that the finish is "maintenance free" or "never cracks".
  • Pressure to pay most of the amount upfront.

Every finish has limits. A good applicator will tell you them; see microcement disadvantages for an example of an honest list.

What to Agree in Writing

Get these agreed in writing before work starts:

  • the finish, colour and approved sample;
  • the system: primer, coats and sealer;
  • areas and measurements;
  • timeline and payment stages;
  • protection of other areas;
  • cleaning and care instructions;
  • what happens if defects appear, and within what period.

For Architects and Designers

If you are specifying a finish for a client, ask the applicator for physical samples in the actual colour and texture, a sample or mock-up on site where the finish is new to you, and the product data for each layer of the system. Agree who signs off samples before work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing a Decorative Finish Applicator

How do I choose a microcement applicator?

Look for finished microcement projects, a site visit before quoting, an on-site sample and a written system of primer, coats and sealer.

What should I ask a plaster applicator?

Ask about preparation, number of coats, primer and sealer, samples, timeline, protection of other areas and aftercare.

Why do quotes for the same finish differ so much?

Usually because of differences in preparation, number of coats, sealer and area measured. Compare line items.

Should I get a sample before work starts?

Yes, ideally on your own surface and under your own lighting, and keep it as the approved reference.

How long does a decorative finish project take?

Colortale's guidance is a few days to a couple of weeks or a month for most residential projects, depending on size.

What are red flags when hiring an applicator?

No examples of the finish, no site visit, no sample, vague specifications and "maintenance free" promises.

Does the applicator matter more than the product?

Both matter, but these finishes are made by hand on site, so skill and preparation decide the result.

What should an architect ask a decorative finish applicator for?

Physical samples in the chosen colour and texture, a site mock-up where useful, and product data for every layer of the system.

What should be in the written agreement?

The finish and sample, system, areas, timeline, payments, care instructions and the remedy for defects.
