Choose limewash for a soft, matt, breathable wall with gentle colour movement that is brushed on and renewed easily. Choose Venetian plaster for a smooth, polished, stone-like surface with depth and sheen that is trowelled on in layers and is more durable and easier to wipe.

Both are lime-based, both are breathable, and both are made to look handcrafted. The difference is in thickness, technique and finish.

What Is Limewash?

A thin, brushed lime paint. Limewash is made from slaked lime, water and mineral pigments. It soaks into porous surfaces such as brick, plaster, concrete and stone and dries to a velvety, chalky matt finish with cloud-like variation.

What Is Venetian Plaster?

A thin, trowelled decorative plaster built up in layers and burnished. Colortale's Venetian range includes Carrara (coarser marble granules, moderately glossy), Veniso (smooth and glossy), Seta (a metallic sheen), Epoque (metallic pearlescence) and Venetian Facade (described as a stronger Marmorino for exterior walls). For how marmorino differs within the family, see Venetian plaster vs Marmorino.

Which Is Better for Bathrooms and Kitchens?

Venetian plaster. Colortale lists Venetian Facade as suitable for interior wet areas such as saunas and showers (Venetian Facade). Limewash is better kept away from splash zones. For showers, Colortale's tadelakt and micro cement are the usual choices.

Which Is Better for Exteriors?

Both can work. Limewash weathers gracefully into streaks and is renewed with a fresh coat. For a more durable plaster look on humid exteriors, Colortale offers Venetian Facade, a hydraulic lime-based Venetian plaster that Colortale describes as ideal for exteriors even in very humid climates, with protection against mould and algae.

Which Suits Which Interior Style?

Limewash suits relaxed, earthy, Mediterranean, Japandi and wabi-sabi rooms. Venetian plaster suits refined, luxurious and classical interiors, hotel lobbies and statement walls. Colortale's Takshini project in New Delhi used Carrara on walls and ceiling for a stone-like feel.

Can You Put One Over the Other?

Venetian plaster can generally go over a sound, prepared wall, and limewash can go over lime-based surfaces, but limewash will not bond well to a burnished or sealed plaster. Ask for a site assessment before changing finishes.
