Can You Limewash Brick?
Yes, and brick is a well-suited surface for it. Limewash soaks into porous brick and mortar and cures into it, so it does not peel. Lime is already a component of traditional mortar, so it is compatible with masonry. Colortale's limewash page lists brick among the surfaces it suits (limewash).
Which Looks Can You Get on Brick?
Anything from a whisper of colour to a fully chalky wall, controlled by dilution and number of coats.
- Washed: a thin coat lets the red brick show through, like old whitewashed brick.
- Semi-opaque: two coats soften the colour and joints while keeping the brick pattern.
- Opaque: more coats give an even, chalky surface with brick texture beneath.
Ask for a test patch on your own brick, because absorbency changes the result. For shade choices, see limewash colours.
Which Bricks Suit Limewash?
Unpainted, unsealed, absorbent brick takes limewash directly after dampening. Test absorbency by splashing water on the brick: if it darkens and soaks in, limewash will bond. Glazed, very dense, sealed or painted brick does not absorb and needs cleaning, removal of sealers or paint, and usually a mineral primer first. Reclaimed brick can carry old coatings or salts; test it.
Limewash on Exterior Brick
It works well and weathers gracefully. Outdoors, limewash slowly thins in the rain, often forming soft streaks that many people like. Old coats do not need removing before recoating. Do not apply just before heavy rain. Our exterior limewash page covers facades, and is limewash waterproof explains what to expect in the monsoon.
Can Limewash on Brick Be Removed?
Partly. Fresh limewash can often be washed back; cured limewash is bonded into the brick and is hard to remove completely. Treat it as a long-term decision and test first.

FAQ
Can you limewash brick?
Yes. Unpainted, absorbent brick suits limewash well because it soaks in and cures into the brick and mortar.
Can you limewash painted brick?
Only after the paint is removed or a suitable mineral primer is applied, because limewash cannot soak into a paint film.
Will limewash on exterior brick wash off in the rain?
Cured limewash does not wash off in normal rain, but it weathers slowly, often into soft streaks. Exposed walls need recoating from time to time.
How do I know if my brick will take limewash?
Splash some water on it. If the brick darkens and soaks it in, limewash will bond. If water beads, the brick is sealed, glazed or too dense.
How many coats of limewash does brick need?
One thin coat for a washed look, two for semi-opaque, and more for an opaque finish. Test on your own brick first.
Can limewash be removed from brick?
Fresh limewash can often be washed back, but cured limewash is hard to remove completely. Test before committing.
How do I care for limewashed brick?
Dust it gently, brush off any salts once dry, and recoat worn areas. No stripping is needed.
